An integral part of getting the most out of your Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce membership is getting involved in committees that help promote business and economic growth in our area. Below is an explanation of the different opportunities and how you can get involved to improve your business, and ultimately your community.
Board of Directors
The role of a Chamber Board member includes: serving as a spokesperson for the Chamber; providing visibility as board members in the community and at Chamber events; acting as a conduit of information to staff. The Board of Directors also participates in and facilitates the advocacy, financial and organizational effectiveness services that the Chamber provides.Standing Committees
Business Advocacy
Develops positions the chamber adopts on local, state, and federal legislation and issues
Marketing
Markets the Chamber and Chamber programs
Membership
Establishes policies and programs relating to membership development and retention
Technology
Spearheads Peoria Wireless effort
Promotes new technology in Peoria area
Transportation
Transportation issues in all modes of transportation
Workforce Development and Education
Works with local education and workforce providers to improve and enhance the pool of prepared workers both today and in the future
Young Professionals Organization of Greater Peoria
Develops programs and opportunities to attract and retain young professionals within the region
Important to know:
• Eight to ten members
• The Chair of each committee is a Chamber Board Member.
• Other committee members must be Chamber members.
• Committees change annually, beginning in May
• All committees meet monthly.
Subsidiaries
Peoria Area Chamber Political Action Committee
The PAC is a subsidiary of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce whose goal is to support and elect candidates at the local and state level who support a healthy economy, favorable business climate, high quality of life and progressive future for our communities. Business friendly candidates will receive financial support from the PAC to assist with their campaigns.
Business Resource Services
Business Resource Services of Central Illinois is a wholly-owned, for-profit subsidiary of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce. It provides value-added products and services to Chamber of Commerce members by creating a purchasing alliance of Chamber members, and utilizing the strength of that alliance to develop and market products and services which will assist in maintaining a profitable environment for member businesses.
Taskforces and Workgroups
The Chamber forms short and long term taskforces and work groups as the need arise. These can revolve around a topical area such as Transportation or be task specific such as a marketing work group to assist in the redesign of marketing materials. These are done on an as needed basis and vary in size and duration of work.
Program Committees
Ambassadors
The focus of the Ambassador program is to further the mission of the Chamber by increasing member retention and participation through mentoring, referrals, personal contact and communication.
Community Leadership School
Develops and trains new leaders for service to the community. CLS acquaints participants with a broad range of programs and issues, familiarizes them with the local government, and makes them aware of community services and resources.
Golf Outing
This committee helps plan the Chamber’s annual Golf Outing, held each summer.
Business Showcase
This committee helps plan the annual Business Showcase, the area’s largest trade show held in the spring.
Awards
This committee helps give direction to the awards given out to area businesses every year at the Heartland Partnership Annual Meeting.
Important to Know:
• Two to ten members
• Committee participants must be Chamber members.
• Each program determines when the committee meets, how long members serve, and during what time of year members are active.
